Now that summer is here, it is time to catch up on all the shows you missed during the regular television season. The writer's strike may have gotten in the way a little and sometimes it made it hard to keep up with what shows were airing and which ones were gone. The first stop for you should probably be the network's actual websites if you have high speed internet. You'll be able to watch tv shows online without having to download them. They will just stream to your computer. Most of the major networks and even some of the smaller ones that are only available through cable or satellite have started airing their shows for free on their websites. The only problem with that is if you have a slow connection or have bad DSL or cable connectivity because it can sometimes make for choppy play. The other issue is if you live outside the US and want to watch US tv shows, oftentimes you are blocked from doing it on the network websites.
Other places to watch free tv shows include Hulu.com which airs NBC owned content (like The Simpsons) and some content from Fox as well. Unfortunately though, Hulu is also only for US users.
Next up is download services like Amazon and iTunes. Both services allow users to pay to download individual episodes or a whole season. I think usually there is a discount if you will be downloading a full season, but often you may just be better off waiting for the DVD box set. Now, if you only need a few episodes that you missed though, Amazon and iTunes can both be a good deal at $1.99 per downloaded episode. I'm not sure you can download from either service if you live outside the US though.
And finally, there is the one time fee services or free tv show downloads. The way these are set up is instead of paying for individual downloads, you just pay a one time fee. After that you download the shows that you want to watch and store them on your computer, rather than watching them online. The big advantage is that you don't have to worry about lags in your internet connection once the show is downloaded, so it won't freeze up on you. The other advantage is that the tv shows can be downloaded by anyone anywhere, so if you are looking to find where best to watch free tv shows, it is probably on your own computer!
